Picture this scenario…one of the hottest temperatures forecasted for the opening round of the Women’s Open combined with Oakmont’s difficult test of golf. This should shape up to be one of the most grueling open championships ever.
The US Open (both Men’s and Women’s) is designed to test the ability of the best golfers in the world. We have seen time & again many championships won with scores hovering around even par.
The conditions at Oakmont (both weather and course) could possibly set the field up for the winner to shoot above par for the tourney. Here’s why I think it’s possible:
✓ The greens at Oakmont stimped at 14 yesterday. That’s insane and much faster
than the women face anywhere else on tour.
✓ Pin placements will be key as Oakmont offers very few birdie chances to tough
positions.
✓ Oakmont will average 6,600 yards or so for the weekend, but don’t forget the holes
that can turn things around in a hurry…the par 3 8th hole can play a whopping 252
yards which means several players this weekend will have difficulty reaching the
daunting par 3; while the par 4 17th hole plays at 260 yards (only 8 yards longer) and
allows the longer players to be tempted to go for the green. Oakmont also boasts a
par 5 that can top out at over 600 yards!
✓ Did I mention the heat?!? Oakmont (in perfect weather conditions) will test the
stamina of the world’s best golfers, but add the stress of dealing with unbearable
heat & humidity and the player with the “coolest head” will come out on top.
So get ready for what is shaping up to be a great test this weekend. Now if only we can get
announcer Johnny Miller to not remind us a thousand times how great his final round 63 was at
the 1973 Open!
The best golf shot ever? This ball was actually completely stopped …. and then it happened, it took a turn, then another …..
U.S. Open Time Again! It’s that time of year again that almost all serious players enjoy- the U.S. Open!
It is the one tournament (major or not) that allows the winner to be somewhere around even par at the end of four rounds. No 20-25 under in this event!
The president of the USGA once said “We are not trying to embarrass the best players in the world, just identify them”.
Some people feel that the conditions are so severe that luck plays too much a factor in who wins and who loses. But I feel just the opposite. Over the course of four rounds the player that makes the fewest mental and physical mistakes will prevail. So, sit back and enjoy the greatest test of golf presented to the greatest players in the world at one of the most beautiful places in the world (Pebble Beach).
