To our Friends here at Sugarloaf Golf Club,
PLEASE take a few minutes to read the information below. Our friends Carl & Jen Kapes have two lovely children who have been diagnosed with MPS. Since it is such a rare genetic disorder, you probably have never heard of it and that’s one of the reasons why Wayne & I are asking for your help! We are hosting a “BEAT MPS” Scramble on Saturday October 2nd and we hope you can join us. All of the information is below. IF you can’t join us for the golf tournament, please consider coming to our post-tournament Penn State vs Iowa Tailgate fundraiser party! We’ll have a big screen TV and a true tailgate at halftime. All proceeds will go directly to TEAM SALFILIPPO. Refreshments & tailgate food will be available. Entry is FREE, but please remember we will accept donations for refreshments!
Please call the Pro Shop for more info: 570-384-4097
Open your heart and help us beat MPS!
Please join our family as we raise money to advance education and research to improve the quality of life for the children affected by this disorder.
My children Ryan (5 years old) and Brayden (2 years old) Kapes have been diagnosed with MPS Type III-A, better known as Sanfilippo Syndrome. It is a genetic lysosomal storage disease caused by the body’s inability to produce specific enzymes. Normally, the body uses enzymes to break down and recycle materials in cells. Individuals with MPS are missing the enzymes that make this process possible, causing progressive damage throughout the body, including the heart, bones, joints, respiratory system and central nervous system.
While not evident at birth, symptoms develop in early childhood as more cells become damaged by the accumulation of cell materials. It is estimated that 1 in 25,000 births in the US will develop some form of MPs. At this time, there is no cure or treatment and children seldom live to reach their twenties.
The Team Sanfillippo Foundation is a non-profit medical research foundation that was started by a group of parents whose mission is to find potential therapies that can bring hope to families and children touched by this devastating disease. Through our efforts, we hope to pride support through education, research & therapies to help improve the quality of life for children affected by this disorder.
